How to add a person to a photo on iPhone

There are two ways to do this on an iPhone. One is built in and quick, but it gives you a cut out. The other takes a minute longer and gives you one ordinary photo.

Free to try. You only pay if you want to keep the full-size picture.

The built in way: lift a person out

On an iPhone with iOS 16 or later, you can touch and hold a person in a photo to lift them out. You can then paste them into another picture in an app like Freeform or Notes.

It works like a sticker. The person is a cut out, so the size, the light and the shadows will not match the photo you place them in. That is fine for a quick joke or a note. It does not look like one real photo.

Our way: add them in Safari or Chrome

  • Open this page in Safari or Chrome on your iPhone. There is no app to download.
  • Tap to choose the photo you want the person added to, from your camera roll.
  • Tap to add one to three photos of the person. A clear face works best.
  • Write where they should stand, like "next to me, arm around my shoulder".
  • Wait about a minute for the free preview. It carries a watermark.
  • If you like it, keep the full-size picture from $6.99. You can download it to your phone, and it prints well at 8x10.

Photo tips

  • For the person you are adding, pick a photo where their face is clear and well lit. Looking toward the camera works best.
  • Two or three photos of them from different days help the picture look more like them.
  • Old, faded or black-and-white photos are fine. The finished picture is in colour to match your family photo.
  • For the family photo, leave a little room where they would naturally stand or sit.

Questions

Does the person get cut out and pasted in?

No. We make a new photo in which they stand in the scene, with the light and size of the people already there. Everyone else is left as they are.

Do I need to sign in to try it on my phone?

No. Your first previews work without signing in.

Does it work on an Android phone too?

Yes. Any phone or computer with a browser works the same way.
