Ways to honor a parent who passed away at your wedding

You do not need a big gesture. A few small ones can make the day feel like they are part of it. Here are ideas couples use most, and one of them is a photo.

How can I honor a deceased parent at my wedding?

  • Leave their seat empty in the front row, with a flower or a small sign.
  • Set a memorial table with a few photos of them and a candle.
  • Tie a charm or a small photo to your bouquet.
  • Play their favorite song during the entrance, the first dance or dinner.
  • Put a line about them in the program, like "Dad is with us in our hearts".
  • Wear something of theirs: a watch, a ring, a handkerchief sewn into the dress.
  • Make a photo of the two of you together, and set it on the table.

A photo of you and your parent

Upload a photo from the wedding, or a posed one of you and your partner, and a photo of your parent. You will see them standing beside you in the picture.

Print it for the memorial table, or add it to the wedding program. We make the picture only: add the program wording yourself or ask your printer to. Your first previews are free, and a full-size picture is sharp enough for an 8x10 print.

Photo tips

  • For the person you are adding, pick a photo where their face is clear and well lit. Looking toward the camera works best.
  • Two or three photos of them from different days help the picture look more like them.
  • Old, faded or black-and-white photos are fine. The finished picture is in colour to match your family photo.
  • For the family photo, leave a little room where they would naturally stand or sit.

Questions

How do I put a deceased parent in the wedding program?

A short line works best, like "In loving memory of Dad". Add it in your program design or ask the printer. If you want a photo, we can make the picture, and you place it in the layout.

Can I do this before the wedding?

You need a photo to add them to. Use an engagement photo, or add them after the day to a photo from the wedding.

Can I add both of my parents?

Add one at a time. Download the first picture, then use it as the family photo and add the second parent.
